April 6, 2011: “Going Forward with NAMA and Scaled-up Carbon Mechanisms: Engaging with Stakeholders”

Posted on April 6th, 2011 at 6:22pm

Not in Zurich, but where the discussion is: if you are in Bangkok at the UN Climate Change Talks, come to South Pole Carbon’s parallel event at the Royal Princess Larn Luang Hotel.
More information can be found here.

More background information on NAMAS can be found in this article If you want a Nama tomorrow you need a PoA today, written by South Pole’s Roman Schibli and Christoph Sutter for Trading Carbon magazine.

Summary

Parties are discussing proposals on new mechanisms for scaling-up mitigation action. What is “new” and how are these proposals related to existing carbon market mechanisms? Can and should new mechanisms be integrated with existing mechanisms or would they replace them? To what extent do new mechanisms utilize the capacities developed under the existing mechanisms? How can the transition be structured? This event will discuss pathways and main challenges to scaled-up carbon market mechanisms. It will introduce ongoing support programs and pilot activities and seeks to facilitate insights into lessons learnt so far and possible ways forward.

NAMA design for the Mexican housing sector

Posted on March 30th, 2011 at 11:27am

At COP 16 in Cancun in December 2010, Perspectives and Point Carbon presented a detailed design of a emission reduction policy (NAMA) for accelerated deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energy in the Mexican housing sector.  The NAMA, which was developed on behalf of the Mexican Ministry of Environment (SEMARNAT) and the National Housing Commission (CONAVI) is now looking for support from industrialized countries. It would massively upscale successful “green mortgage” programmes implemented in the Mexican housing sectors in the last years. For the full study, see the document below: NAMA design in the Mexican housing sector

NAMA financing, design and monitoring

Roughly 70 participants attended the  “NAMA financing, design and monitoring” workshop organized by the ZCMA on March 31, 2011, 5-7 p.m., in room ML F 34, ETH subsidiary building, Sonneggstrasse 3, 8092 Zürich, Switzerland.

Some pictures – also including the informal drink meeting that followed the workshop are available here. All presentations given (see programme below) are available for members in the library of their ZCMA account.

Programme:

  • Introduction to NAMAs  (Jürg Füssler - Infras)
  • NAMA financing – sources and use  (Martin Stadelmann – University of Zurich)
  • Fueling the diffusion of renewables – a techno-economic assessment on the financing needs of NAMAs  (Tobias Schmidt – ETH Zurich)
  • NAMAs in the forestry sector (Tanja Havemann – Beyond Carbon & Martin Gehrig – TREES)
  • Design of a NAMA in the Mexican building sector  (Axel Michaelowa – Perspectives)
  • Interactions between PoAs and NAMAs  (Christoph Sutter - South Pole)

The workshop was also open to non-members of the Zurich Carbon Market Association against a fee of 50 Swiss Franks (students free).
