The Zurich CMA was delighted to welcome about 40 participants from the players of Zürich’s important Financial Hub and (other) Carbon Market Experts to discuss Investment Risks and Opportunities in the Carbon Market.

After a somewhat provocative start by Stefan Rüegg, Manager Sustainability Consulting, PriceWaterhouse Coopers mostly focusing his intervention around three thesis, as depicted in the picture:

.. three challengers intervened:

• David Bresch, Head Sustainability & Political Risk Management, Swiss Re
• Tuomas Rautanen, Head Regulatory Affairs and Consulting, First Climate
• Maximilian Horster, Managing Partner, Climate Neutral Investments / South Pole Carbon.

The vivid discussion that followed was moderated by Richard Vögeli, Member of the Board and Senior Advisor, Brugger und Partner AG and focused mainly on the required distinction between the regulated and the voluntary carbon markets, the broader picture of internalizing externalities, the relative significance “carbon” is going to take in the overall “cake” of sustainability issues (such as water, etc) and the role of carbon markets (especially in mitigation of volume risks (vs. carbon projects developed in-house)).

Emissionshandel für Treibhausgase – quo vadis?

Die internationalen Verhandlungen über eine Fortsetzung des Kyoto-Protokolls nach 2012 scheinen nicht vom Fleck zu kommen. Hat der erst mit dem Kyoto-Protokoll ins Leben gerufene grenzüberschreitende Handel mit CO2-Zertifikaten bereits wieder ausgedient? Ist die verbreitete Skepsis gegenüber solchen Zertifikaten gerechtfertigt? Wird dabei bloss mit “heisser Luft” Geld gemacht? Hält der internationale CO2-Handel reichere und ärmere Länder nur davon ab, zuhause eine griffige Klimapolitik umzusetzen? Oder ist er ein Instrument, das beide Seiten dazu bringt, insgesamt mehr Klimaschutz zu betreiben?

Emissionshandelssystem der EU

Auch das Emissionshandelssystem für Unternehmen in der EU schlittert von Krise zu Krise: gestohlene und rezyklierte Emissionsrechte, Mehrwertsteuerbetrug und Spekulationsvorwürfe bringen den Ansatz zunehmend in Verruf, über ein Emissionsziel für Treibhausgase einen knappen Markt und damit einen Preis für CO2 zu schaffen. Sind diese Probleme ein Konstruktionsfehler des Emissionshandelssystems? Oder sind es nur Kinderkrankheiten eines neuen Marktes, die leicht geheilt werden können?

Und die Schweiz?

Wie soll sich die Schweiz in diesem von Unsicherheiten und Verunsicherung geprägten Umfeld verhalten? Ist der Kauf aus dem Ausland stammender Zertifikate¨über 2012 hinaus eine Option? Soll die Schweiz am EU-Emissionshandelssystem teilnehmen? Die Veranstaltung bietet eine offene, sachliche Diskussion dieser kontroversen Themen.

The venue for our ZCMA Drinks Meeting on October 4th is the relatively new, charming “Café des Amis” just a little North of Limmatplatz, or South of Kafi Schnaps. Easily accessible from the city center via bus 46 (from HB).

We look forward to seeing you there to discuss the latest news and anecdotes over some drinks.

Please join us for a ZCMA Drinks Meeting on June 15nd, 2011 (we moved the originally announced date (22nd) since on that day our member organisation myclimate will hold its summer party, to which all climate guys and girls are kindly invited.

We will meet at 7pm at the Bar “Terrasse” at Bellevue (Limmatquai 3; see google map provided).

If the weather is nice, we enjoy the early summer evening on the terrace outside, and keep us updated about the latest market news (and gossip) from Barcelona to Bonn.
